Film Made in Italy
An Essential History of Italian Cinema
Film Made in Italy. An Essential History of Italian Cinema aims to become a textbook for an English speaking audience interested in knowing a brief history of Italian cinema. In particular, the volume target is students of American colleges in Italy and Anglo-American Film Studies departments. A peculiarity of the book lies in a series of “comparisons” (between past and present, between genres from different eras, or between films from a different decades). This approach allows the book not to proceed in exclusively chronological order. It starts from the situation of contemporary Italian cinema and then, through a long flashback, traces the story of Italian cinema from the silent era to Neorealism, from the cinema of the Authors to the Italian comedy, from the “spaghetti western” to the horror and other genres, with attention to gender dynamics, history, ideology and mise en scene. Thanks to its simple, yet scientifically rigorous (but not academic) style, the reader will be able to enjoy the adventurous cinematic history of the Bel Paese.
